Feature of the Week: The Dusk by Josh Freese and Clovery

Let's start off the New Year strong.  I got lucky finding this one, I can't even remember how.  But when I found myself entranced by each page, I knew I found something well worth the read.  The exceptional tone use and precision in the execution will leave you in awe, but I'm sure that the potential of the story will have you coming back for more.  The Intense. The Awesome. The Dusk.  Check it out.

A NEW YEAR'S EVE SPECIAL
12/31/09
 Featuring:  Odin's Wrath by Raynart

My my my.  What a spectacular first 4 months this has been.  2009 was great as well.  So to commemorate such an important year, (it's the end of a decade as well), I wanted to show off one of the most fantastic displays of artistic genius, I've ever seen, pro or amateur.  I'm not supposed to pick favorites, haha, so I won't.  But I'd like to thank each and every artist that gave me the honor to display them, and perhaps let them know what an inspiration they are to all aspiring artists, including myself.  Through these features, friendships have formed, as we connect with each other from all around the world, communicating with art as our language.  I think my resolution will be to keep in touch with more of these artists, even after their feature is done.  I've met some wonderful people so far.  So as we say goodbye to 09, from myself and on behalf of the team at UGE, I'd like to say that 2010 will be the best year yet.  Happy New Year!

Feature of the Week: MYth: Eternal Gift by Zelda Wang

So the countdown for 2009 is steadily reaching zero, and I've saved the best stuff for last.  Of course all of my previous posts for Artist of the Week are equally good in their own way, but this next one definitely needs no introduction.  MYth might be one of the most popular and known web manga I've come across, it's even a Toykopop Rising Star winner.  Moreover, it contains what many webcomics these days lack: substance.  There's definitely something fresh about Ms. Wang's approach to mythology, and it's something everyone can enjoy.  Kids, observe how it's done.

P.S. Want a piece of MYth of your own to have forever and ever? (Sure you do) Well, Zelda does commissions, too.  Get 'em here @ http://zeldacw.idv.st/

Feature of the Week: Denizens! Attention! by MadMindInk

This next comic isn't too far into the story; maybe because the pages look like they take an insanely long time.  D!A! reminds me of some old children's books I used to read and is just as whimsical.  The author has mentioned that it is a fantasy also, which makes me all the more curious to see what happens because the fantasy element has not yet been introduced.  Enjoy this weeks feature and congrats to the author!

Feature of the Week: Beast Hunt by Goku and Radittz

Yeah, yeah, I know.  First off, I've got to admit I did a great bit of searching to find any other name to call the authors than Goku and Radittz, but you'll be able to find them through this link so no problem.  I am an admirer of versatility, I can spot it right away, and honestly I couldn't give you a reason why Beast Hunt isn't in some Barnes & Noble right now.  From what I've read, the plot is simple enough to get into and follow, and has a colorful cast of familiar characters.  Did I mention the art?  Oh yeah, well it's incredible.  Also, the author has mentioned that shonen isn't even her most familiar genre.  Did I mention versatility?  Oh yeah, well she's got that too.

Feature of the Week:  K.E.N.Y.U. by Tokiro

Today is a good day for Comikkaze; I've got a story that you're probably not used to, especially appearing on a Feature Monday.  For one, it's our first Mature rated comic.  It's not stylish.  It doesn't have to be.  And it shows you everything, so the squeamish be forewarned.  But what I took from reading K.E.N.Y.U was something of a mix between Frankenstein and Street Fighter where the superficiality of man is a thin layer of protection and with every bone-contorting punch, it moves us closer to who and what we really are beneath it all.  Be sure to check this one out.  It definitely has the potential to be a classic.

Feature of the Week: Blade of the Freak by Contreras

My oh my.  Sorry I'm late for Feature Mondays, but I've got some nice shonen parody goodness to make up for it.  If you've noticed, of course, every feature I've done is different, but they all have an essential quality which makes them so noteworthy.  That's the desire to flip the typical genre and make it a gem.  The style in Blade of the Freak is obviously a little more comical than most, but it matches perfectly with the absurdity of the plot.  The best part is, it's long running and already has plenty of issues out, so if you find yourself hooked, you can indulge a little.  Enjoy!

Feature of the Week:  Salad Days by Nafisah Tung

I get excited whenever I find a comic that genuinely captures my interest.  This one was recommended to me by a very reliable source and I'm so happy to be featuring it.  Salad Days is very stylish, yes, but what makes it such a treat is that it's backed by thoughtful content and a grounded sense of realism.  It may be about a school of supernaturals, but at times it's easy to forget they're not human.  It's much less fantasy than I presumed it would be.  I wish I could say more, but currently Salad Days is undergoing a drastic make-over, one of which thousands of fans are steadfastly anticipating the result.  I hope you all enjoy this feature of the week as much as I have.

Feature of The Week:  Grim Reaper School by Meaghan Beninati

Now this is another comic I was instantly drawn to by its quirkiness.  Grim Reaper School is about a dead girl learning the "trade" of being a grim reaper.  She comes into possession of a demonic scythe that attracts negative spiritual energy, a danger to her and everyone around her.  Maybe the reason I like the lead character, Charlie, so much is she's much like a female Yusuke Urameshi (Yu Yu Hakusho), but perhaps even a little more selfish.  I have so much fun reading this comic, the characters are so animated it's as if they don't even need dialogue for you to get a gist of the story.  I'm looking forward to later chapters.  And that's our Feature of the Week!

Our First Feature of the Year:  How It Ends by Dave Belton

Free banner maker at BannerFans.com

The Apocalypse never looked so funny.  This comic is based on the reincarnated four horsemen of the Apocalypse, reborn in the weirdest and most incompetent vessels, of course, and how they go about bringing the world to it's end.  Last time I checked it was still in its first issue, but I'm already hooked.  Dave's got a quirky style that's enthralling to the eye, it's a joy to read.  I'm interested to see where this story goes.  And that's our featured artist of the week!
